Last weekend we decided to walk a section of the bayside coastal trail from Mentone to Rickett's Point. This section of the trail is about 6 km return, but the trail continues on in both directions so the walk can really be as long as you like. Dogs must be on lead on the trail, but at both Mentone and Rickett's Point you will find year-round 24 hr off-leash dog beaches.

We parked above Mentone dog beach (photo below) near Charman Rd. This is a year-round 24 hour off-leash dog beach, so is a great choice in the summer months.

The sandy trail winds its way along the cliff top through scrubby coastal vegetation and is more shaded than the paved path that runs along Beach Rd.

There are lots of great bay views and lookout points along the way (and a couple of cafes!).

The year-round 24hr off-leash dog beach at Rickett's Point starts at the ramp at the Beaumaris Yacht Club car park and runs ~1 km to McGregor Ave. From April to October dogs are allowed on many of the adjacent beaches, so longer beach walks are possible.

Rickett's Point is a marine sanctuary so, out of respect for wildlife, dogs are required to be kept away from the rock pools and rocky platforms. However, there are still plenty of rocks out of the tidal zone to climb on and explore.

We really loved this beach, there was so much to explore and lots of friendly dogs to play with. We particularly enjoyed rolling in the large piles of stinky seaweed. Apparently that meant we needed a bath when we got home...
