In the new year we decided to walk part of the Hobsons Bay Coastal Trail, between Altona and Williamstown. We started at Altona dog beach (PA Burns Reserve) and walked to Williamstown for lunch and then back again. This section of the trail is about 7km one-way, winding its way through coastal wetlands and featuring great views of the city.

The trail is a shared use for cyclists and pedestrians and dogs must be on leash. It's a sealed path and well-marked.

Parts of the coastal areas are important conservation areas where dogs are not allowed, so be sure to stick to the main trail.

Williamstown is a good spot for a lunch break, with plenty of cafes. Also a good spot for ice cream - in fact the Williamstown Ice Cream Shoppe will also cater to furry family members, selling dog ice cream which definitely got our paw of approval!!

Enjoying some dog ice cream from the Williamstown Ice Cream Shoppe!

This is a longer walk and quite exposed, so we would probably recommend it as a good one for cooler weather (and definitely is not suitable for hot weather). However, the 24 hour off-leash dog beach at Altona does provide a great opportunity for cooling off and/or burning off any left-over energy after a big hike!

Still some energy left for ball-chasing at Altona Dog Beach after the walk!

Altona Dog Beach is a fantastic spot!
