Last weekend we went and checked out Fossil Beach on the Mornington Peninsula for the first time. Unlike the sandy beaches we are used to, Fossil Beach is covered in smooth pebbles and rocks, so it took us a while to get our footing!

Fossil Beach is located between Mornington and Mt Martha and is part of the Fossil Beach Geological Reserve. There is a convenient car park on the Esplanade just north of Bentons Rd, with clear signs to the dog-friendly beach, which is off-leash all year round.

The beach itself is rocky and not large - only around 100 metres in length. When you come down the trail from the carpark, the beach is on the left and to the right there is an old section of sea wall that you can walk along.

The beach feels secluded and was very quiet when we visited - we only saw one other person walking their dog while we were there. It's not a great beach for swimming and chasing balls because the rocks are hard to run on ...

... but exploring the rocks was something different and fun for us.

The beach on its own probably isn't worth a lengthy road-trip, but if you are in the area and looking for something a bit different we would definitely recommend checking it out. If you are after a longer walk, there is a cliff top trail that continues on in either direction.

An added bonus of Fossil Beach (for the pawrents at least) is that we did not bring home a truckload of sand like we normally do when we go to the beach!
