Kurth Kiln Regional Park is a real hidden gem and makes for a great day trip to escape the hustle and bustle of Melbourne. A meander through the beautiful and tranquil native forest will leave you feeling revitalised! Dogs are allowed on leash in the park and camping is also permitted in designated areas.

We parked at Kurth Kiln Picnic Ground. From here there are two main walks: the Tomahawk Creek Track and the Thornton Walking Track. Each loop is ~2km and 30min to 1hr return (depending on how much time you spend stopping to sniff things!).

The Tomahawk Creek Track winds its way along the creek through tall forest and lush fern gullies. The path is well-maintained but can be wet and slippery at points so sturdy footwear for the humans is recommended (full disclosure we did encounter leeches).

There are plenty of picturesque spots where you can stop and enjoy the peaceful bush setting and the listen to the creek babbling away.

The Thornton Walking Track takes you through a range of different vegetation types with information signs provided. After you reach the bridge crossing the creek you can either return the way you came or loop back to the picnic ground via Scout Loop Track, which takes you through the camping area.

Of course we couldn't leave without taking a photo in front of the old kiln. The kiln was built during the second world war to produce charcoal to fuel cars when petrol was being heavily rationed.
